Triumph at the 2025 Oracle Green Tech Hackathon: KAFU Innovators Teams Shine

At the 2025 Oracle Green Tech Hackathon hosted at Strathmore University, KAFU Innovators made a historic mark. Competing under the theme "Innovating Today for a Greener Tomorrow," Team EcoGuard brought home the prestigious Judges Award, while our two other teams secured coveted Finalist positions.

Putting KAFU on the Map

When three teams from Kaimosi Friends University’s School of Computing and Information Technology (SCIT) traveled to the Strathmore University iLab Africa Centre for the Oracle Green Tech Hackathon, they carried more than just code—they carried a vision for a sustainable future.

Powered by Oracle and Strathmore University, the October 2025 hackathon challenged Kenya's brightest tech minds to build solutions under the theme: “Innovating Today for a Greener Tomorrow.” Our students didn't just participate; they dominated. Out of a highly competitive national pool, all three KAFU iiHub teams reached the final stages, with one taking home a major trophy.

🏆 The Big Win: Team EcoGuard Takes the Judges Award

Team EcoGuard captured the judges' attention with a powerful civic tech platform designed to turn environmental awareness into immediate action. They built a mobile and web platform empowering everyday citizens to report and track environmental threats—such as pollution, deforestation, floods, droughts, and wildlife dangers—in real-time.

Key Features:

  • Real-time, geo-tagged environmental threat reporting.

  • An agency & partner coordination portal for swift action.

  • Integrated tree planting & conservation trackers.

  • Community alerts and emergency notifications.

The Impact: EcoGuard bridges the critical gap between seeing a problem and fixing it, turning everyday citizens into active environmental guardians.

Pushing Boundaries: Our Outstanding Finalists

KAFU's excellence didn't stop at the winner's podium. Our two other teams were recognized as top-tier Finalists, showcasing incredible diversity in how technology can address climate change.

Team Verdant Techies took a behavioral approach to climate action. Their platform, EcoCred, gamifies conservation by rewarding users for eco-friendly actions like tree planting, recycling, and choosing green transport.

  • The Tech: Features an EcoPoints reward system, achievement badges, community leaderboards, and partner reward redemptions.

  • The Impact: EcoCred makes conservation fun, visible, and rewarding—turning green habits from a chore into a lifestyle movement.

Why This Matters

This phenomenal showing at the Oracle Green Tech Hackathon proved something we have always known: KAFU students have the talent, creativity, and technical execution to compete on any stage.

This achievement not only brought immense pride to the university but also successfully put KAFU iiHub on the radar of global tech giants, paving the way for future industry partnerships and opportunities.

Congratulations to all our student innovators. You are proving that the future is green, and it is being built right here at KAFU.
